Highlights
- I am a teacher. I have been doing this for over 20 years: I won a couple awards; I was chosen to start and lead a school; I continue to teach whenever I have the chance (and read about teaching, and talk with teachers, and co-teach with teachers, and observe teachers to learn from them); I constantly improve my teaching. The people I teach learn a lot and tend to want to keep working with me. Importantly, I never forget what it is like to be a teacher, and always treat teachers with dignity. If we expect teachers to respect students (and vice versa), there can be no breakdowns of respect at any level of an organization.
- I have a variety of experiences teaching, leading schools, developing plans to overhaul school models, and developing teachers and leaders. These experiences make me uniquely qualified to help a school or district (like yours) develop a vision for instruction, a vision for teacher and leader development, and a plan (with my support) to get there and become a school or district that continuously improves and moves toward a common vision.
- I am a sought-after professional development leader. I had helped lead the National Summer School Initiative math institute for the past three summers, I have led most of the mathematics-centered professional development for Achievement First Middle Schools over the past four years, and I spent a month-long volunteer residency at Ace School in Kathmandu, Nepal, helping lead professional development (and develop coaches, and so on.)
- Importantly, I have had a lot of failures, and I have made a lot of mistakes. I know what it is like to sit in a PD session and hear from someone who thinks they have all the right answers because they taught for three years, and it is beyond frustrating.
- I believe in children and the adults they will become; I believe in current adults’ (sometimes unrealized) ability to help children develop through an intense focus on pedagogical mindsets and skills.
- I also believe that we have an obligation to ourselves and to the adults and children in our care to make the most of our time together, both in terms of efficiency (I cannot stand wasted time) and in terms of joy and connection. Working together should be fun and inspiring.
